6 Lessons We’ve Learned Running a Marketing Company

When we started Breezy back in 2019, we had a vision: a marketing company that broke away from the traditional agency model. One that was flexible, scalable, and actually made sense for small businesses, startups, and solopreneurs. But if you had asked most people back then (and we did 😂), they would have told you it wouldn’t work.

Six years later, here we are. I’ve never been more excited about the direction of our company, but I also can’t help but reflect on all of the lessons, both personally and professionally, I’ve learned from running this company. Some lessons came easy, and others…well, let’s just say they were hard-earned.

Whether you’re an entrepreneur, business owner, or someone thinking about starting something new, I hope these six lessons help you along the way.

1. Trust your vision, even if others don’t see it.

When we first talked about launching Breezy, we were met with a lot of skepticism. The idea of a subscription-based marketing service just didn’t make sense to people in 2019. Everyone was telling us it wasn’t going to work. The traditional agency model was so ingrained in the marketing space that most people couldn’t imagine another way of doing things. But we saw the gap, and we knew there had to be a better solution.

If you really believe in something—if you see an opportunity others don’t—trust your intuition. Not everyone will understand it, and that’s okay. But six years later, I can say with confidence that I’m so grateful we went for it.

2. Try to avoid debt if at all possible.

This is a practical one, but it’s been a game-changer for us. From the beginning, Breezy was bootstrapped. We didn’t take outside investment, and we’ve never gone into debt to keep things running. As a result, we’ve been profitable for the vast majority of our six years in business.

Now, I know that’s not possible in every industry. This is obviously a unique situation and we’ve been very blessed for this to be the case. Some businesses require funding, loans, or investments to get off the ground. But if you can avoid it, it gives you a unique kind of freedom that has benefited us in so many ways. We’ve been able to make decisions without pressure from investors, the ability to reinvest where it matters, and have the leeway to build at our own pace.

3. Your values and mission should guide everything.

Your core values are not the thing that you just like to print up and put on a wall. If that’s all they are for you, you really should reevaluate because core values should truly be something that guides you.

Take concentrated time and effort to build out your values and mission very early on. They should guide everything that you do in your business. They affect how you hire, invest your money, deal with clients, and build out your services.

We are not perfect, but I truly believe that our core values guide us and we try to come back to them in every decision we make. They have had such a massive effect on how we run this business, the virtual culture that we’ve developed, and what I believe is, really outstanding customer service.

When you’re in the early stages of building a business, it’s tempting to focus only on logistics—services, pricing, growth—but one of the most important things you can do is define your core values early. They will truly guide everything. If you haven’t taken the time to define your values, I can’t recommend it enough.

4. Don’t get married to your ideas—your business will change.

Just because something starts out one way, doesn’t mean it will stay that way. And honestly, you don’t want that! If your business looks the exact same way today that it did 5 years ago, you’re not growing or climbing towards more.

Breezy today looks nothing like Breezy in 2019. Our services have evolved. Our processes have changed. We’ve pivoted multiple times. And that’s a good thing.

Not only does the market and economy shift, but trends, client preferences, and what benefits the company can all change as well. Don’t be afraid to do what makes the most sense for you. Be agile and be adaptable. I’m truly so grateful to have a team that’s extremely adaptable.

We’ve always stayed focused on what best serves our clients, and that has meant adjusting, reworking, and sometimes completely overhauling what we do. The lesson? Don’t get too attached to how things start. Stay flexible, and be willing to evolve.

5. Make your people the priority.

One of the best decisions we’ve ever made is putting our people first. I have never regretted investing in our team. When we put more money into our staff, whether it’s promotions that maybe cost us a little bit of profitability or in-person retreats, I’m always happy to do it.

The things that have made me the happiest in being a business owner over the past 6 years are the times when employees talk about how working for Breezy has positively affected their lives. There’s truly nothing more important. That’s actually what gives purpose and meaning to this job and I’m so grateful for it.

6. Persevere. Persevere. And persevere some more.

Entrepreneurship is not easy. You’re going to have a lot of curveballs. I’ve learned to persevere through a lot of difficult times, bad economies, pandemics, things not working, or and even my own bad decisions.

You just have to keep going.

Keep putting one foot in front of the other. Keep trying different stuff. And whatever you do, don’t give up. That is entrepreneurship. And six years in, I wouldn’t change a thing.
